Natural wines from Vipava Valley

Natural wines from Vipava Valley

The Vipava Valley, a wine region located between the Karst and the Alps in western Slovenia, just an hour's drive from Ljubljana and half an hour from the Italian border, hides vineyards that produce wines with a character that is difficult to replicate in Europe.

Those who discover it love to return.

A valley shaped by the wind

The valley is constantly crossed by two opposing winds: a warm and humid southwest wind and the bura, a cold northeast wind that can be violent but is a valuable ally for winemakers. It aerates the vines after rain, preserves the health of the grapes, and gives the wines the freshness that makes Vipava wines recognizable.

Beneath the vines is marl and flysch — remnants of the seabed, rich in minerals. This combination of living soil, Mediterranean sun and Alpine wind creates a terroir that is rare in Europe. The wine produced here bears the mark of this place in every sip.

Varieties that can't be found anywhere else

The Vipava Valley is home to indigenous varieties that are almost exclusively Vipava. Zelen, Pinela and Poljšakica are varieties that grew here centuries before the world even began to notice them.

Zelen It is a white variety with a distinct minerality, green notes and the freshness of the Bura wind. It is grown on only a handful of hectares in the world.

Pinella is an ancient variety with delicate aromas, present in the valley since at least the 16th century. Its lightness and freshness are perfect for those looking for a wine without pretensions.

Poljšakica It is the rarest of the three — planted on only a few hectares, named after the winemaker who brought it to the valley two centuries ago. When you encounter it in a glass, you know you've come to the right place.

Natural winemaking as a way of life

The Vipava Valley has become one of the reference regions for natural winemaking in Europe. Organic production, spontaneous fermentations, maceration of white varieties, maturation in wooden barrels without filtration — this is nothing new here. It is a tradition that some wineries have preserved for generations, before it got its name.

Natural wines from the Vipava Valley combine what natural wine lovers are looking for: minerality, authenticity, vintage character and expression of place. White wines with maceration have been at home here long before the world started talking about orange wine. Red wines from Merlot, Cabernet and Barbera are structured and capable of aging.

An experience you won't find in larger regions

The Vipava Valley is not Bordeaux or Tuscany. And that is precisely its advantage.

The wineries are small, family-run, run by the hands of the owners who know every vine by name. A tasting here is not an organized tourist product — it is a meeting with people who have dedicated their lives to one place and one wine. The story you hear over a glass is true.

One such winery is Vina Krapež from Vrhpolje — an organic family winery that has been producing wine since 1928. Four generations, 8 hectares of vineyards in southern locations, natural wines with maceration and spontaneous fermentation. Their Malvasia received a platinum award at the Decanter World Wine Awards.

When and how to visit

Vipava Valley can be visited all year round. Spring brings blooming vineyards and a peaceful valley before the tourist season. Autumn is harvest time — the vineyards are golden, the cellars are boiling, and the smell of grapes fills the air.

The valley lies along the Ljubljana-Trieste highway, making it an ideal stopover on the way between Slovenia and Italy. Most wineries accept visitors by prior arrangement — meaning you get full attention, not crowded tourist tours.

For those looking for an authentic wine experience, away from the crowds and without compromising on quality: Vipava Valley is the answer.
